These sessions will help you build the engine of a midfielder, speed endurance of a wing-back and the pace of a striker!

Why Conditioning for Football?

Football is an intermittent sport requiring a range of physical qualities for successful performance such as repeated bursts of speed, strength, power, agility and speed-endurance over a 90-minutes.

The underpinning physiological quality that enables high performance in these abilities is aerobic fitness. Elite football players have large aerobic capacities, and fitness separates different standards of performance.

What does the programme involve?

This is a 6 week programme - that will take you from the End of June / Start of July through to the start of the season. 

The programme is carefully structured to build running volume for the first phase, before moving on to higher-speed efforts to prepare for the start of the season. 

Each week of the programme is themed on legends of football, and their physical attributes! Each session focusses on different adaptations needed for the highly complexed game, where you need to perform, repeat and recover from high intensity actions over 90 minutes! 

Each session lasts 20-30 mins, which makes them easily doable at the end of your team-sessions or in your own individual training. Pitch-based workouts are the preferred, but we have included treadmill variations for any gym-based sessions. We recommend doing 2-3 sessions per week, 

These sessions are suitable for players at all levels. The target times are designed for semi-pro / professional standards, however you can adapt the target times to make the sessions achievable for you!

Your Coaches - Dr. Alan Ruddock and Danny Wilson 

We are a team of sport scientists currently working in boxing, where we have helped elite athletes fulfil their athletic potential with world-class conditioning and strength training. We’re using our extensive knowledge and research to power red zone running sessions for all athletes and runners!

Despite working in boxing, we have a wealth of experience in a range of sports – including football. Danny has experience at the academy and first teams at Sheffield United and Chesterfield, and Alan provided physiological support for football referee Howard Webb for 2010 and 2014 world cups.
